NOUS art studio — online space for improving your figure drawing skills

Practice with classical art models containing 3D information designed to help you understand form and build knowledge to start drawing without references

Built by artist without using AI

The Approach

The main focus of the studio is studying form and helping you start "thinking in 3D" which is described by many artists as a shift in mindset, often referred to as "seeing through" objects to understand their structure and volume. This approach is beneficial for artists working in various mediums and areas from oil painting to animation.

It is based on the analytical drawing method, where you study structure and perspective of 3D form rather than just 2D outlines.

The goal of this approach is to be able to draw any complex shape, including the human body, from any angle without the dependency on a reference image.
Although it requires a lot of effort, it brings artistic freedom and clears space for authenticity in return.

The Studio

The idea of the studio is similar to when you’re drawing in a physical studio, where you make studies of a model gaining skill through practice.

But in this case the role of the teacher is played by the 3D hints and information stored in the model itself. This gives you flexibility in finding your own path in growing your skill.

The information that is implemented into the models and the overall approach are similar to what is used in traditional art education.

The models are mostly built of original scans from classical art sculptures to absorb the aesthetics and perception of beauty that had been gathered through centuries and were coded into the art pieces.

The ability to look at the model from different angles and regular interaction with the 3D world will gradually help you start thinking in volume and looking at the piece of paper or canvas as a 3D space.

The variety of models can be divided into two levels:

Each model includes layers of information that you can experiment with and to build your own understanding of shape, volume, perspective, and anatomy.

"Volume lines" and "structure" help you explore the 3D aspect of models and shift your vision from 2D to 3D.

"Anatomy" gives information about the human form and helps make sense of why it looks this way.
